(1991 - 2007), Breisgau being the region of the city Freiburg im Breisgau).
HISTORY: Founded in 1912, but the origins of the club goes back to 1904                                         with the founding of two separate clubs: 'Freiburger Fußballverein 04' (who in                                         1909 changed the name to 'Sportverein Freiburg 04') and 'FC Schwalbe                                         Freiburg' (who in 1905 changed the name to 'FC Mars' and to 'Union Freiburg'                                         in 1906). In 1912 these two clubs merged to create 'Sportclub Freiburg'. After                                         WW I, in 1918, they joined temporary with 'Freiburger FC' (founded in 1897) to create 'KSG Freiburg' and a year later, in 1919, they disjoined and became the football section of 'FT 1844 Freiburg' (founded in 1844). In 1928 they became independent again and entered into a deal with ' PSV (Polizeisportvereins) Freiburg 1924' to share their Stadium. This lasted until the bankruptcy of 'PSV' in 1930 and the club returned as the football section of 'FT 1844 Freiburg'. After WW II all German clubs were required to be re-founded and to change their names and 'Sportclub Freiburg' was changed to 'VfL Freiburg' until 1952 when they became again independent and returned to the old name 'Sportclub Freiburg' which is still in use today.
